1 INTRODUCTION

The Walking Dead Katana Michonne

A Viking warrior’s sword was his most treasured possession, and only the greatest Vikings were wealthy enough to afford the immense effort it took to create one. The importance of these weapons was evident in the Viking Sagas, as many of the fabled stories revolve around legendary swords with names like "Leg Biter", and "War Fire". Even the more basic swords were passed down as heirlooms, and cherished by the families.

These foam Viking swords will give you the look and feel of a professional Viking warrior, yet still allow you to whack your friends in an all-out LARPing battle. To give you a better idea of what you can expect out of these cushioned weapons, here is a quick product review:

2 DESIGN

First things first, these babies are light; weighing in at only 8 oz. (approximately). Despite the light weight they are well built and durable, especially considering the price. They are made up of a PVC core for stability, with a solid foam shell surrounding it. The variety of foam used is well cushioned and soft, so there is very little risk of hurting your friends in a LARP battle, or when you feel like taking a swipe while in regular cosplay. The sword is finished with lead-free gold, silver, and black paint, and has a glossy clear-coat varnish for protection.

The handle is a measured for a one-handed grip, which is traditional for a Viking sword, as shields were almost always employed by Viking Raiders. The handle is wrapped with black faux-leather, giving it a nice soft grip with good friction. The PVC core runs through the handle all the way to the pommel as a full tang, making for solid impacts without bending.

Pros: Cons:
  • Light weight.
  • Full length PCV core including tang.
  • Well cushioned.
  • Soft faux-leather grip.
  • Durable.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Not indestructible.
  • Slight imperfections in surface.
  • Simplistic finish.
  • One-handed grip only.

3 CONSTRUCTION

It seems that the sword is constructed in three parts; the PVC core, the solid outer shell, and the Faux-leather grip. The outer shell is seamless as far as I can tell, and looks as though it is molded around the PVC in one step, which makes the construction very stable. The Faux-leather grip is adhered to the foam shell very nicely, and has no loose flaps to catch on anything. The foam that is used for the shell is well cushioned, but also firm and strong. I believe the blade should be capable of withstanding quite a beating before giving out.

The sword measures approximately 36 inches from pommel to point, with a cross-guard measuring right around 6 inches. The grip portion of the handle is about 4.5 inches, so it should have the space required for large hands in gauntlets. The blade length is approximately 27.5 inches of cushioned foam goodness, and is constructed for some hardy swinging action.

4 CONCLUSION

This foam Viking sword is very well made for the price, and is a perfect item for LARP scenarios, as well as for that Viking cosplay that requires a bit of attitude. The construction is sturdy, and the functionality hits all the important aspects of a good foam sword. I would recommend this item to anyone looking to add and an aggressive flare to their Viking Cosplay, or anyone who just wants to play around with a foam sword.
